This is the first Russian Leica copy of Soviet design. The FED 2 Pre-series is similar to the FED - 2 Type 1 which followed it. It does, however, have a rectangular rangefinder window (round on the Type 1), and this is sometimes found in a plate with an arched top, as in the pictured camera. It does not have flash synchronization The back and baseplate, which are joined, are removable to allow film loading. There are two locking keys, at either end of the baseplate. The lever alongside the film rewind knob is for diopter adjustment.

The FED-2 is a completely new design with many new features. It introduces a new body with solid stripes top and bottom and a removable back that locks onto the camera with 2 keys. This assembly is die cast and not machined and has shoulder strap lugs. The rangefinder assembly has also been completely redesigned. It is now a 67mm extra long base combined range finder and viewfinder. There is a pointed rangefinder cam with the rotation axis on the wind side. There is a diopter adjustment lever under the rewind knob. There is also a new shutter. The shutter has speeds of B,25,50,100,250 and 500. The shutter release has a standard thread for an internal cable release. There is also a lever around the shutter release to allow for rewinding. The Shutter curtains are covered by metal housings. The range finder window has a small rectangular cover with a rounded top that is held on with three screws. I have only seen 2 cameras of this variation and both had serial numbers between 700 and 800. This is a rare camera. There are only a few small changes made to this camera. The range finder window is now round and the rewind selector is now a round dial around the shutter release. There are three changes in this camera a socket for flash has been added and a rectangular cover has been added in side to cover the shutter release. The third change is the engraving on the top of the camera with only a stylized " FED" in Cyrillic script being left. There is an extremely rare(1 camera known) 1967 model with "50 years of October"(see FED-4(b)) engraved on the top. This is an indirect reference to the Communist revoloution which took place in October 1917. This is also the only known FED 2 commerative. This camera has a new shutter speed selector with a center portion that does not rotate being used to set the speeds and a new large rounded range finder coupling. Anew lens is also introduced the 5cm f2.8 Industar-26M with focusing lever. These cameras were also available in the colors of brown, green, light blue, dark blue and gray. The dark blue is so dark as to appear black except in strong light. I have also seen one colored camera with a collapsible lens. This is the final model of the FED-2. IT has a new shutter with speeds of B,500,250,125,60 and 30. Cameras from the mid 1960s appear to have serial numbers reflecting the year of manufacture, however , they are not. The lens may be an I-61 52mm f2.8 on late models. There are a small number of variations as follows: 1. Standard block letter engraving. 2. New engraving with "FED" in Cyrillic script over block letters. 3. Standard pebbled finish. 4.
